Asset models and inventory codes??

Is it possible to create assets without first creating an asset model or to create inventory without going through roughly the same process of creating an inventory code? I have a lot of one off items that I am trying to keep up with. Creating asset models and inventory codes for each item that I likely only have one of anyway seems like an extra unnecessary step for my needs. Is there a workaround for this?
