Topic: Questions about checking out assets

Hi,

I'm not sure I'm doing this "right", but I need a way to track assets that get checked out and back in again, and I'd like it to update the Location for the items. It seems like I can Move the assets to a new location, or I can check them out, but not both.

When I check out an asset, there is a "To" field that always says "Checked out". Can this value be modified? If I can check out "to" a specific location, that would be perfect.

Re: Questions about checking out assets

A "Check Out" in Tracmor is when a user is taking an asset from its location, so it is no longer in a location but instead in the possession of a user.  For example, perhaps a user is taking a projector from its storage location to use for a presentation. After the user is done using the projector, they check it back in to its storage location.

If you want to track an assets movement between locations, you should instead use the Move transaction.

You can view our video tutorial on creating and managing assets here.

Re: Questions about checking out assets

Ahh thanks Justin, that clears things up a little bit.

Now (of course) for a follow-up question. If I move an asset that is used as a parent to other assets to a new location, should it also update the location of any child assets?

Re: Questions about checking out assets

Well, now I see that to automatically move a child asset when a parent asset gets moved, I need to Lock the child to the parent. smile

Re: Questions about checking out assets

Yes, you are correct; locking child assets to thier parent is required in order to allow you to move the parent item and get all of the children into the car to go along for the ride.

Having learned this, I'm not quite sure why there can be child objects that aren't locked to their parent--maybe form some sort of parent-child association which is not a physical representation.
